WPMI is known to be an NBC affiliate station which is owned by Deerfield Media and licensed to Mobile, Alabama; it operates in the Pensacola, Florida using UHF digital Channel 15. The network has a duopoly with an independent station WJTC. Sinclair Broadcast Group operates both WMPI and WJTC via LMAs. Its studios and offices are situated in Mobile at Azalea Road near I-10, whereas its Master Control facilities are placed in Unincorporated Escambia County, FL on Mobile Highway; other internal operations are also managed by Master Control facility. WPMI’s transmitter is located close to Robertsdale, Alabama.
WPMI signed on-air on 12 March 1982 as the only independent entity in Alabama State. After WEAR which was established 28 years before (which later became a sibling network), Channel 15 was the only commercial channel in the Mobile market. Hess Broadcasting was the first owner of the station, and right after its launch, they telecasted general entertainment stuff which includes sitcoms, dramas, cartoons, religious material, movies, and westerns. It’s very first studios were situated on Saint Michael Street in Mobile. In 1985, the channel’s assets were sold to Michigan Energy Resources by Hess. Currently, WPMI carries 27 hours of local newscast every week out of which 5 hours are dedicated to weekdays whereas one hour is given to Saturdays and Sundays. Mostly the local news are about Okaloosa, Rose, Mobile, Escambia, and Santa countries. News reports, weather, sports updates, extended local news, traffic reports, entertainment feed, featured videos, trending things and much more is reached to the audience.
